in 2016, i led the art direction and production design for a series of promotional videos on behalf of the highly-anticipated second season of mr. robot.

mr. robot is a techno-dystopian drama series centered around a hacker collective known as fsociety. to illustrate the group’s widespread growth by the beginning of the second season, my team and i produced a range of videos broadcasted and geotargeted to selected countries in real time on facebook live — the first promotion of its kind to leverage the platform at this scale.

with limited resources, timing, and budget, this project demanded nimble thinking and action. without access to a professional soundstage, every video was shot in our agency’s office, which meant dressing it authentically enough to appear as a series of different countries. props and items were sourced anywhere from thrift shops to fellow employees’ graciously loaned belongings. most of all, going live meant no chance for editing or post-production. every second counted. every decision mattered.

the result was a subversive and successful campaign that echoed the spirit of the show and its characters.
